The issue: The academic technology department is considering establishing a semesterly page printing quota in Western labs in February. Our view: Unlimited printing is bad for the environment and Western's already-thin wallet. The proposed quota would allow for 500 free pages per semester for undergraduate students, faculty and staff members.

Should illegal immigrants receive amnesty? Yes

The Murray State News, Murray State University, KY

Robin Phelps

I will begin with a disclaimer because I know many will refute me in this matter and regard me as un-American.

Hear me out as I confront this issue and hereby squelch opposing claims by addressing this topic as it relates to our nation fiscally and economically, socially, globally and to me personally.

COMMENTARY: War in the Caucasus: Georgian/Russian conflict is a complicated affair

College Heights Herald, Western Kentucky University, KY

10 hours ago by Hugh Phillips

There has been much hand wringing in the west over the dispute between Russia and Georgia but little has been written or said about the people most directly involved: the Ossetians and the Abkhazians. Be prepared for a shock: Americans might find it hard to believe that people actually exist that would want a close relationship with Moscow.

Campus facelift also lifts our spirits

The Journal, Webster University, MO

Over the years we here at The Journal have had our complaints. We try to keep our issues to a low roar, but it seems the administration of Webster University is finally listening. The new lockers for the photography students did not go unnoticed, and neither did the fact that the Quad is now suitable for student activity.

Political junkies blinded by Biden blunder

So after months of waiting with baited breath as if the next season of Heroes was coming back, Barack Obama finally picked his vice presidential nominee. It was Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware.

You can imagine my disappointment. I woke up just after Obama's announcement Saturday, Aug.

Before lighting up, consider the rights of non-smokers

The Alestle, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, IL

23 hours ago by Soni Kumar

Coughing and hacking is the typical, painful routine my lungs go through every day on the SIUE campus when I walk outside and encounter a wonderful haze of cigarette smoke.

If you are a smoker on this campus, then I am talking to you. What bothers me is the whiff of smoky air outside that suddenly appears in my face, then my mouth and eventually in my lungs, resulting in me frantically having to swoosh it away so I don't suffocate.

All the lies my rush chair told me

The Daily Illini, University of Illinois, IL

Whether to join a fraternity or not is one of the biggest, life-defining decisions a new student can make. That's why it's very important you do not commit to a house until you have given it careful thought, by which I mean "consumed twelve Jell-O shots."

Ha ha, that was a joke.

Students are too busy for lasting social change

Students are too busy for lasting social change

The Journal, Webster University, MO

1 day ago by CHRISTIAN LOSCIALE

I'm guilty.

Our generation, myself included, often talks about promoting change, but our efforts are meager compared to those who lived through decades of change, such as the 1960s and 70s. We falter because we're distracted.

Students hardly live up to the activism of the 60s and 70s.

If you didn't like Michelle Obama before last week's Democratic Nomination Convention, held in Denver, she may have changed your mind after her speech during the convention on August 25.

Obama's opened up the week as negative opinions were quickly shunned after her eloquent speech that showed a softer side.

Column: McCain goes off the bridge to nowhere

The Daily Eastern News, Eastern Illinois University, IL

1 day ago by Matthew Casner/Columnist

Over the weekend, we have all been getting acquainted with John McCain's surprise pick for vice president, Sarah Palin - in some cases, more acquainted than many of us would like. Nevertheless, I believe a few choice items do merit repeating. It is worth mentioning that little more than a year and a half ago, Palin was the mayor of Wasilla, Alaska - a tiny hamlet outside of Anchorage with a population of 5,000 people.

In 2002, John Malkovich directed "The Dancer Upstairs," which featured the recipient of last year's best supporting actor award Javier Bardem.

Malkovich is now in "Burn After Reading," the new Coen brothers' film.

Malkovich proved he could tell a story while working with actors to give passionate performances, just as he did in his own illustrious acting career.

Make SIU your home

Daily Egyptian, Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, IL

1 day ago by Rosemary Simmons

This may be your freshman year or your senior year. However, the number of years you have attended this university is not what determines if SIUC feels like home. The major factor that makes SIUC your home versus an institution at which you are receiving your degree is a sense of belonging.

GDI-Gate a prank but not useless

The Daily Illini, University of Illinois, IL

Do you hate the Greek system? Does the sight of Greek letters make you sick? Do you wish barn-dances were outlawed in the state of Illinois? On Friday, someone who apparently shared this opinion put out an e-mail bashing Greeks on campus, but forged it to make it appear as though it came from Chancellor Richard Herman.

Definition of a sex offender

The All State, Austin Peay State University, TN

2 days ago by Sunny Peterson

Webster's Dictionary defines sexual offender as "a generic term for all persons convicted of crimes involving sex, including rape, molestation, sexual harassment and pornography production or distribution. In most states convicted sex offenders are supposed to report to local police authorities, but many do not.

FREE TO CHOOSE

As many people know, if they are paying attention to politics or social freedom, abortion is a hot topic right now in our society.

We are in a debate about a subject which could never be easy to determine one way or another.

Is abortion right or wrong? Should it be allowed, monitored or denied? Who has the right to decide?

It is very easy to see every side of this argument, but it is sometimes difficult to decipher what is a true opinion and what constitutes an understanding of others' opinions.

U of L branding: Notice the difference?

Louisville Cardinal, University of Louisville, KY

2 days ago by Jane Mattinlgy

Like the other makeovers around the University of Louisville, their promotional items have changed too. The Times New Roman font of the former U of L logo is now replaced with Delta Jaeger. Who can blame them for the new logo that was released earlier this year? That thick, sans-serif-like font can catch a student or visitor's eye.

Separation of stars and state

Paris Hilton should stick to Hardee's ads.

When I say this, I mean not only Paris, but the majority of Hollywood in general.

There's no denying that the United States is obsessed with its own celebrities. Instead of sticking to their jobs of acting, writing and whatever Paris does, they've managed to stay in the spotlight by involving themselves with other organizations and causes.

Accomodating a growing SIUE population

The Alestle, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, IL

Whether I am stumbling up the stairs in Peck Hall shoulder to shoulder in a sea of students or waiting in lines that wrap around the inside of the Union Station convenience store, I am aware of big changes at SIUE. What are these big changes? Why, more students, of course.

"The last time I freaked out, I just kept lookin' down, I st-st-stuttered when you asked me what I'm thinkin' 'bout."

This used to be my favorite line from Miley Cyrus' hit song, "See You Again." It took on a whole new meaning when I considered how LifeStyles Condoms might use it in a commercial.

The University of Louisville listened.

Ah, finally some attention.

They listened to the grumbles of stomachs and the voices of a concerned student body.

Changes to U of L's food service provider, from Chartwell's to Sodexo, is a positive step forward in the right direction.

A STEP TO THE LEFT

Indiana Statesman, Indiana State University, IN

This election has, without question, been the most demanding, most emotionally and most mentally draining since I first learned that my Mom and Dad were not the supreme authorities in my life, the very highest rung in dictating what I can and cannot do.

In third grade, my fellow students and I divided our government into three branches.
